At the age of 18, I started my career in technology working for Sanofi Pasteur as a junior systems administrator. After about eighteen months, I realized I could earn more money and learn about technology faster by consulting, which I did for about 4 more years. In that time I had also moved to Gainesville, FL and started working for a startup marina management company which gave me a great opportunity to hone both my technology and business skills. Fast forward 10 years later and I was promoted to Vice President of Information Technology. While I had spent a lot of my time learning about technology, I never thought much about the need for a formal education until I found myself at the table with the C-Suite. With the encouragement of my wife I decided to go back to school and earn my bachelors degree. Little did I know, that for-profit school I earned my associates from was not accredited and I found myself at thirty years old with a dilemma, do I start over again? After weighing my options and realizing most management positions require at least a bachelors degree, I decided I had to go back to college if I wanted to further my career. After doing some research I found Santa Fe College was a great place to start. While I'm six years in now and facing another two more years, I am a lot closer to that bachelors degree than I would have been had I let the fear of my age and the length of time deter me from progress.
